Description of organisation

Short description
The Institut f. Wiener Klangstil carries on applied research in the field of musical acoustics. It offers lectures, seminars and other activities addressing instrument players, teachers and builders in order to help them understand the operating principles of their instruments in general and distinctive acoustical features of special Viennese instruments in particular.

Description
The Institute was originally founded with the aim to provide a material and intellectual basis for the preservation of the Viennese Sound, particularly the Viennese Wind Instrument Sound. This is where the name "Inst. f. Wiener Klangstil" - which can be translated like "Inst. f. Viennese Sound or Musical Style" - originates from. The original task already triggered close co-operations with instrument makers and instrumentalists of Viennese top orchestras, which have endured till today. Even current resarch projects sometimes gladly address specific Viennese questions.

The tasks of the institute are especially:
- Scientific research in the field of the acoustics of musical instruments and the analysis of musical sounds.
- Style-critical and culture-historical investigations related to the Viennese wind- and stringed instrument sound and playing style.
- Securing the tradition of handcrafted musical instruments by offering complementary assistance for instrument makers.
- Competent help and guidance for students working on scientific papers, diploma thesis and doctoral thesis
- Expert advice and assistance - according to available lab equipment - in questions related to objective assessment of wind instrument quality and operating principles.

The institute owns a state of the art scientific library about physical and timbral fundamentals of orchestral instruments containing many papers and dissertations which are not available elsewhere in Austria. Furthermore it offers a growing online database for publications in the field of musical acoustics currently containing more than 7000 citation entries.

Modern computer systems for measuring acoustical characteristics of musical instruments, which can be used for quality assessment and improvement of musical instruments and which have become part of the institute's high-tech laboratory, have been developed here.
